Online Communication Courses

The PASS Program offers online communication courses designed specifically for Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) to build the English language and workplace communication skills needed to succeed in the Canadian nursing profession.

Delivered entirely online, the courses are accessible before and after arrival in Canada and help prepare IENs for nursing-specific communication expectations, workplace interactions, and effective engagement with clients and health care teams.

Online Communication Courses

A. Nursing Communication Foundations (NCF) – (48 hours, self-directed)

Pass program has developed a special online course, Nursing Communication Foundations, designed for nurses with an English language proficiency level of Canadian Language Benchmark 5 and 6. The course requires a minimum of 35 hours of independent study time. The course also helps to develop online learning proficiency, improve computer skills – must-have knowledge for the profession in Canada and take your first step toward Canadian workplace readiness.

During the course you will create personal vocabulary, grammar and communication reference guides to use for future study. The course has four parts:

  • Vocabulary Foundations: learn and review words that are specific to nursing and health care.
  • Grammar Foundations: learn the fundamentals of English grammar as applied to a nursing context.
  • Communication Foundations: listen to different dialogues from common situations that nurses encounter in healthcare settings and answer questions about the information you hear.
  • Cultural Foundations: review different scenarios in which culture, not language and not medicine, is the main communication challenge.
